      1.    REINVENTING SYSTEMS DESIGN

For the last twenty years, Systems Design always held the annual dinner in January at a hotel or some   nice location.  The annual dinner was not only for staff but also for spouse and directors as well.  From this year onwards, Systems Design has decided to make the annual dinner a staff affair only.   The environment out there has changed and we have to re-invent ourselves to make ourselves relevant.  The company shrunk from an all-time high of 75 staff to only about 38 now.  We need to break down our inter-department barriers.  “We are a smaller company and must think along those lines,’’ indicated Willy Taw, the managing director.  “Everyone has to chip in to cover another person’s duties.  It is not going to be this is yours, this is mine.  The mindset has to change.”  That was the theme of Willy Taw’s address  to the staff on its 21st gathering on 25 January 2002 held in the office premises at 5.30 pm.

      2.    3COM #I  IN GIGABIT ETHERNET PORT SHIPMENTS

Market research firm Cahners In-Stat, Phoenix, Arizona, reports that 3Com Corporation has strengthened its leadership position in the copper-based Gigabit Ethernet market with 29.8 percent of the market’s switch ports shipped worldwide during the third quarter of calendar year 2001.  3Com shipped a total of 35 thousand Gigabit Ethernet over Copper ports, according to the figures in the report.

      3.    SOPHOS ANTI-VIRUS PRODUCT

Sophos Anti-Virus recently set up its Asia Pacific office in Singapore.  It then went into high gear appointing resellers in the region.  Systems Design signed up as a reseller as Sophos provided some unique advantages over the other anti-virus software companies.  The key points are that Sophos is one of the top five anti-virus companies; the anti-virus software is available on multiple legally allowed to use the anti-virus software in the home.  The biggest benefit, however, is that customer who buy Sophos from Systems Design will be provided free anti-virus services including recovery for the period of the coverage.  There will not be anymore time and material charges should any virus strike the PCs or servers.

       4.   ELD - ELECTRONIC LICENSE DISTRIBUTION

Many of you may not have heard of this ELD.  But those who have recently installed Microsoft products will be aware of Microsoft Product Activation.  This is one way of reducing piracy of software.  In the past where software is sold in boxes, there was a serial number accompanying the CD-ROM that was used as the activation key for the software.  But this method of activation did not prevent software piracy.  So Microsoft introduced Product Activation for some products like Office XP.  What is Electronic License Distribution?

  • WAB      -     Web Airline Booking

  • WIB       -     Web Inbound Booking

      7.      IMPLICATION OF PREFIX 6 TO TELEPHONE FIXED LINE

With effect from 1 March 2002, telephone numbers in Singapore will be 8 digits instead of 7 digits.  A 6 is added to the front of all fixed line telephone numbers.  Current mobile or pager numbers are all based on 8 digits already.  How is this going to impact the software provided by Systems Design?  The answer is little or no impact.  But the users will need to update such numbers in the master files.
