2. KLENCO SWITCHES OVER TO WINDOWS NT
Klenco Singapore who has been a Systems Design customer since 1981 using Data General and Motorola systems, has now cut over to a Windows NT system running on a Compaq server. From Oct 1, the invoices and delivery orders are, now printed from the new system. There are still some hiccups on the new system but they are already looked into. Klenco hopes to duplicate this system in the other countries that they are operating next year.
The old Klenco system running on the Motorola Unix System was fine-tuned over the years for some of Klenco’s unique requirements, and it had production, inventory, sales invoicing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger and sales commission. The new NT system will have one additional application and that is warranty. Moving an integrated system to another platform like Klenco is not an easy task.
The users will first have to test out the modules on a standalone basis. After which, it will have to be tested on an integrated basis. A number of the accounts people had put in extra effort and overtime for the final testing. Credit must go to the Accounts people at Klenco Singapore who have persevered over the last 12 months to shake out the bugs. Every test yielded something to be changed. Systems Design staff was on hand to entertain the changes. But in certain cases, the staff has to explain that things work differently under Windows.
Now that the system has gone operational, the management of Klenco felt that it will be good to let the system stabilize before duplicating in the other regions that Klenco operates. The key strength of the open platform is that hardware can now be sourced locally in that country and the software can then be brought in. Klenco will find that regionally they will be able to use the “same” specialized application software.
