      2.      HOAXES & VIRUSES

Politically motivated virus makes it into the top three.

This is the latest in a series of monthly charts counting down the ten most frequently  occurring viruses and hoaxes.

For July 2002, the virus chart is as follows, with the most frequently occurring virus at number one:

Position Last Mth           Virus                                       Percentage of reports

  1.     1                      W32/Klez-H                                           17.7%

  2.     5                      W32/Frethern-Fam                              17.0%

  3.     6                      W32/Yaha-E                                          16.8%

  4.     3                      W32/Badtrans-B                                     5.8%

  5.     2                      W32/ElKem-C                                         3.7%

  6.     7                      W32/Magistr-B                                        2.5%

  9.     Re-entry         W32/Magistr-A                                         1.3%

  10.                             Otbers                                                     30.1%

“While Klez tops the virus chart again this month, more recent discoveries Frethem and Yaha are close on its heels,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos Anti-Virus.  “Yaha came to prominence as a politically motivated virus, launching a rudimentary denial of service attack on the Pakistan government’s website and encouraging Indian hackers and virus writers to join forces and attack Pakistan.”

       3.     NETSWIFT iGATE TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION ACCESS

Rainbow Technologies has recently introduced a complete solution for building an Instant Private Web with two-factor authentication on the client side.  Each user is issued with a personal USB token (like ATM card) that comes with pin that the user is logout after a number of incorrect attempts or when the token is removed from their desktop.

     4.    SYSTEMS DESIGN TO SELL XES X2 PLOTTERS

Xerox Engineering Systems has appointed Systems Design to sell the X2 range of plotters recently.  An engineer, Chia Yee Jock, has already attended the maintenance training in Beijing.  X2 has two versions, namely, TECH and Graphic Arts.  The Graphic Arts has 6 colors (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, Black, Light Cyan and Light Magenta) whilst the TECH has Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and 3 Blacks.  Because the X2 uses oil based inks, the plots can dry up almost instantaneously when plotted and UV resistant too.  But the amazing advantage is the speed.

     7.   3COM NIC HAS FIREWALL

To protect enterprise desktops and servers from attacks by internal staff or external outsiders,    3Com and Secure Computing together has come up with a firewall functionality network interface card for server or client PC.  Without this card, an outsider or staff who may be given access to get into a corporate sales server may snoop into the corporate accounting server.  The protection is on the access coming through the Internet Firewall and not within the corporate network.  Once through, each server does not have individual firewall for protection.
